Ceramics in Pesaro in the second half of the 19th century

In the second half of the nineteenth century, alongside classical decorations, those taken from the glorious Renaissance past, such as historiated and Raphaelesque, asserted themselves, giving rise to the period known as Eclecticism or Historicism. The revival in Pesaro manifested itself around 1850, when the area’s majolica factories drew from the rich collection of 16th century ceramics of Cavalier Domenico Mazza, owned by the Municipality of Pesaro, to reproduce examples of excellent quality.

In fact, the ceramists from Pesaro produce majolica that is close in spirit to the originals of the ancient Duchy of Urbino, demonstrating manual skill and precise technical knowledge. The high artistic level achieved ensured the production of copies identical to the originals, which collectors of the time purchased, both due to the difficulty of finding Renaissance majolica and to the inability to distinguish imitations from 16th-century works.
